Tips for naming your server
- Say what it is. Members should guess the topic from the name: gaming, art, study or friends.
- Keep it short. Long names get cut off in the server list. Discord allows server names from 2 to 100 characters, but under 20 looks best.
- Use one emoji to make the server stand out in a crowded sidebar.
- Check the rules. Server names must follow Discord’s Community Guidelines, especially for public, discoverable servers.
How to match the name to your community
Before choosing a name, write one sentence about your server: who it is for and what people do there. “A chill place for friends to play co-op games at night” points to names like Night Owls HQ or Co-op Corner. “A study group for exam season” points to Focus Mode or Late Night Revision. A name that matches the purpose attracts the right members and keeps the community focused.
Naming channels and roles
Your server name sets the theme, and channels and roles can continue it. A server called The Arcade might have channels like #token-booth (welcome), #high-scores (achievements) and #game-room (voice), and roles like Player One and Arcade Owner. A consistent theme makes the server feel polished and fun to explore.
Growing a public server
If you plan to grow your server publicly, choose a name that is easy to search and share. Avoid special characters that are hard to type, and consider a name that matches your Discord vanity URL (available for boosted servers) and your social media handles. Before inviting people, read Discord’s Community Guidelines — servers with names or content that break the rules can be removed, especially in Server Discovery.
Common mistakes
- Using inside jokes that new members will not understand.
- Very long names that are cut off in the server list.
- Too many emojis or decorative symbols.
- Copying the name of a large existing server, which confuses new members.
