Your Minecraft name appears above your head in multiplayer, in chat and on server leaderboards. Good MC usernames are short, readable and say something about how you play. Here are good, cool and funny Minecraft names, plus the rules for choosing and changing yours.
Minecraft username rules
Minecraft Java Edition usernames must be 3 to 16 characters and can only use letters, numbers and underscores. Spaces and other symbols are not allowed. You can change your Java name once every 30 days from your Minecraft profile. On Bedrock Edition, your name is your Xbox gamertag.

How to create your own MC username
Combine a Minecraft word (biome, mob, block or tool) with a word about you: FrostBiome, LapisLynx. Use capital letters to separate words since spaces are not allowed, and keep it under 16 characters.
Choosing a name for servers
If you play on public servers, your name is how other players recognise you in chat and on leaderboards. Short names are easier to type when friends want to send you a private message or teleport request. Avoid names that are hard to spell, like xXxEnderxXx, because players will struggle to find you.
Names for content creators
If you plan to record or stream Minecraft, pick a username you can also use on YouTube, Twitch and TikTok. Unique invented words, such as Kryo or Lumora, are more likely to be available everywhere. A consistent name across platforms helps viewers find you and builds your brand.
Bedrock and Java differences
On Java Edition, your username is part of your Minecraft profile and follows the 3–16 character rule. On Bedrock Edition (consoles, mobile and Windows), you play under your Xbox gamertag, which has its own rules, including a 12-character limit and number suffixes for taken names. If you play both editions, choose a name that works within both limits so you can keep the same identity.
Staying safe
Do not include your real name, age or location in your username, especially on public servers. Minecraft has a young audience, and a username is visible to everyone you play with.
