Reddit username rules
Reddit usernames are 3 to 20 characters long and can contain letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens. Spaces and other symbols are not allowed. Most importantly, a Reddit username cannot be changed later. You can set a display name on your profile, but your u/ username stays the same forever, so choose carefully.
What makes a good Reddit username
The best Reddit names match the culture: self-aware, a bit witty and often anonymous. Many play on Reddit habits like lurking and upvoting (Long_Time_Lurker, UpvoteCollector). Others are dry jokes about the user (Probably_Wrong, ExpertOnNothing). Underscores make long phrases readable.
Stay anonymous
Reddit is one of the few places where most people use pseudonyms. Do not use the same handle you use on Instagram or TikTok if you want to keep them separate, and avoid real names, birth years and locations. For sensitive questions, many users create a separate throwaway account.
Funny vs. serious Reddit names
If you plan to post in professional or hobby communities, a calm name like CoffeeAndCode or Bookworm_Bytes looks credible. For meme and humour subreddits, a funny name like Sarcasm_Enthusiast fits in. Since the name is permanent, pick something you will still like in a few years. The free Reddit username generator below creates names within Reddit's 20-character limit.
